Three weeks after the opening of the world’s newest airport, Al Maktoum, which serves the huge enterprise zone of Dubai World Central, things are already looking good.
Today saw the low key opening of Al Maktoum International Airport with the first commercial passenger flight to land there, courtesy of Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air.

CARGO at Al Maktoum Airport

Al Maktoum has been operating under the radar of the worlds press since 2010 when it opened it's runways for cargo flights to Dubai World Central. It's enjoyed 3 years of operating cargo and has grown to be Dubai's main aviation cargo hub, taking pressure away from Dubai International Airport.

It's strategic location near to the Jebel Ali Sea Port make it an ideal location for cargo logistics in the region. The following airlines currently operate cargo flights from Al Maktoum Airport;

Capacity

When fully operational, AL Maktoum Airport will have the capacity to handle 12 million tonnes of cargo each year which will see it eclipse Hong Kong International Airport 3 fold which handles around 4 million tonnes per annum at present. By comparison the current top 5 cargo airports in the world are;
